Pre-Op

The surgery went extremely well, thank you very much. Luke was a champ. After a mostly sleepless night we hit the Doctors at an early hour, which was good because Luke was not allowed to eat before surgery. We were increasingly nervous despite the best efforts of Dr. Martin and staff and by the time we had done the paperwork, consulted with the nurse, anesthesiologist, intern (a body builder type fellow who looked like he should be on Grey's Anatomy...we called him McMuscle) and Dr. Martin herself; we were ready to get it done.

Anne got to go back and watch Luke be put under. The scariest part was the smell and look of the OR, the anesthesia itself was quick and painless. Then we were sent off to the waiting room for a grueling hour and voila, the Doctor told us all went off without a hitch!

In the recovery room, Luke looked so small (okay, we know he is small, but you should see him on a hospital bed hooked up to an IV, and heart monitor). However, when he woke up, he was smiley and hungry!

So now, he has his final casts on for three weeks (they were made extra thick, to absorb his constant kicking and banging) which resemble mashed potatoes, and still feel cold and wet like, well, plaster. Then it's time for his Forrest Gump shoes, which he will wear until he starts to stand on his own two feet.
