Luke

(written by his dad)

Luke has been our son for 2 and a half years now. He has come so far and he has so far to go. He's our trooper. A gentle soul, very sensitive, cries easily and often, but recovers quickly. He has recently become afraid of the bath, and fans, and the sound of the washing machine. To his credit, he has recently conquered his fear of the swimming pool, which we hope is the shape of things to come.

In addition to his sensitivity, he struggles still with speech. His apraxia is an ongoing challenge. He attended speech therapy all summer and still speaks very few words. He understands everything we tell him, he follows directions in an age appropriate manner, but he still can't talk to us. Sometimes it's heartbreaking. We're dying to know what he's thinking, to have him tell us what he wants and needs. To tell us what hurts.

On the upside, he is very bonded to us. He will say the name of everyone in the house. He will write the letter "L" for Luke, so he signs our family cards now. His smile is to die for. His laugh will stop you in your tracks. Wherever we are, he wants to be in the middle of it. His health and nutrition are great and he has caught up in so many areas of growth. He loves school!

He is very much a mimic and a Daddy's boy. Below is a picture of him wearing my nerdiest reading glasses. It's his favorite picture of himself. If he's sitting with you and you put your feet up, his go up. If I'm doing the laundry, he'll find one of favorite books "My Daddy" and find the picture of the Daddy in the book doing the laundry and laugh hysterically.

He has his own interesting way of playing. He will gather up several items, like Legos, or spoons, or butter knives, seperate them and figure out which one is best for each family member. He likes to set the table. He's a wiz with Mama's Iphone. He lines up all his toys. Loves the Ipod, but is very particular about what he wants to hear and when (he loves Bollywood musicals). He sleeps like a teenager, up late (possible waiting for Daddy to get home) and likes to sleep in, he thinks naps are for babies.

He has been a source of surprising joy, he's a treasure who brings constant joy to our home and has changes our lives for the better allowing us to focus on what's important and so much less on day to day nonsense. We are grateful every day for his coming into or lives.

When I look at Luke's precious face, I wonder what amazing things he'll do in this life - he's already surmounted so much. There's a reason you found him and a reason he found you. I regret having grown apart these last few years, I've missed out on knowing these two new beautiful Cudmores -- will always love your "big" ones! Enjoy keeping up through your blog and facebook.

Happy Independence Day!

What a precious little guy he is... our Isabelle shares some of his struggles and in caring for and loving her, we have been so abundantly blessed! Amazing how that works, isn't it??
And good for Luke! Sounds like he's making progress all the time :)

Love this post! Little T is 4 and also struggles with apraxia. I know the frustration and the heartache. I've taught her a bunch of signs which she uses quite often to help us understand what she wants. She has a few words now but unless you are with her all day you wouldn't know what she says. She too is taking ST during the summer and will start back with the school ST in the fall.

He is such a sweet and cute little boy!! We are all blessed to be able to love these sweet kids!

Hugs,
Carla
